As part of the workshop, Thompson spent time with Negga and Craig before the rest of the cast was brought in, during which, she says, she was able to ask thequestions like: “Have you thought about how your whiteness plays?” In other words, as she puts it, it wasn’t just a conversation for the actors of color.
The physicality of the play, and the magic that an expertly executed theatrical illusion can create, is clearly important to Craig, but it’s the language that he reveres. Craig’s first exposure to Shakespeare, the “double, double” witches’ chant, took place as a child, in poetry books, but it was an English teacher he had as a teenager, growing up near Liverpool, who introduced him to his first full play,from which he pulled a speech he would use to get into drama school.
This time the stage is larger. “Hopefully, we’ll make some money,” Craig says. The play’s producer, Barbara Broccoli, who also served as producer on the Bond films, would like that. But that money is not for him or Broccoli, really, but for the artists in the city in which he’s lived for more than a decade. Culture, and theater in particular, “matters so much, especially if you live in a city,” he says, “and the past few years have been very tricky on cities around the world.
