Some transit advocates have questioned the city’s lax rule
enforcement around transit lanes, while others said they were perplexed by the decision. D.C. transit users have long complained about cars and trucks blocking bus lanes. Many saw the new camera enforcement program as a path to get drivers to respect the rules.“The bus lanes ARE RED ALL OVER AND SAY ‘BUS ONLY’ on them,” Conor Shaw, a D.C. resident and transit advocate, posted to social media.
DDOT did not respond to questions about what led to the postponed enforcement, whether there is a new target date to begin issuing tickets and if any warnings have been issued since it announced the warning period in July.The enforcement strategy, known as Clear Lanes, is a partnership between Metro and DDOT to reduce the number of vehicles blocking bus lanes and bus zones — the areas around bus stops. The city has 12.7 miles of bus lanes.
Metro said in July it hoped the enforcement would speed up buses, which are subject to crawling traffic during rush hour. Metrobuses often travel at less than 10 mph, according to Metro.More coverage: Air travel, transit, railroads
