Congress worried more blackouts coming in Texas, other states
Federal Energy Regulatory Commissioner Mark Christie, a Trump appointee, warned the blackout that left millions of Texans without power during Winter Storm Uri in 2021 could be a “harbinger.”
The state of the power grid is drawing concern at the national level from Democrats and Republicans alike, not just over the rapid closure of coal and gas plants but the rise in extreme weather events that can knock out generation and transmission lines. But other members of FERC are unlikely to go along with a strategy, which could be in conflict with existing energy law dictating decisions regarding generation be largely left to states, said Christi Tezak, managing director at the consulting firm Clearview Energy Partners.
Sen. Joe Manchin, D-W.V., chairman of the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee, echoed the views of many in his state when he criticized federal environmental policies that made it more expensive to generate electricity from coal, a resource his state has in abundance.
