Bertram Allen, president of the W. H. Passon Historical Society, has been preserving history for more than two decades.

Passon Historical Society president Bertram Allen has been preserving history too often forgotten.An Austinite himself with family dating back more than 100 years in Central Texas, Allen is an expert in the difficulties of trying to connect the past and present of local Black communities.
One of his latest projects is helping to find details on the life of Maggie Mayes. Mayes was a prominent resident of Austin's Clarksville district who opened its first school in the late 1800s. Allen is part of an in-progress Austin City Council ordinance to change Confederate Street/Avenue in her honor.
Council member Kathie Tovo, who represents District 9, has been a driving force behind the city’s plan to remove ties to the Confederacy and instead highlight the contributions of the Capital City’s inspiring women and people of color.
