As the Legislature enters the home stretch, several bills could prove crucial for regional growth and prosperity.

from Sen. Donna Campbell, R-New Braunfels, would create a non-tolled connector between I-35 and State Highway 130 in the New Braunfels area. The House has passed its measure, but the Senate has yet to give the companion bill a hearing.

The San Antonio region contends on a global stage to attract businesses. Our competitors in other states and other countries utilize lucrative economic incentives. Texas has offered modest incentives that, along with our workforce and business-friendly environment, have helped bring Toyota, Microsoft, Caterpillar and Navistar, among others, to the San Antonio area.

One of those state incentive programs, known as Chapter 313, expired at the end of 2022. Major electric vehicle and high-tech companies that had been eyeing Texas for multi-billion-dollar manufacturing facilities have selected other states., authored by Rep. Todd Hunter, R-Corpus Christi, would level the playing field and restore an important tool for attracting jobs and investments while increasing the transparency and accountability of the incentive program.

Since 2013, state law has allowed Dallas and Fort Worth to use hotel taxes normally collected by the state for projects that support tourism and conventions through the designation of “project financing zones.” San Antonio - the state’s top tourist destination — should have the same ability.by Sen.

Finally, much attention has been focused on the many bills filed this session that would limit the ordinance-making authority of Texas municipalities. Most of these bills reflect a reaction to overreaching and ill-considered local ordinances that have proven detrimental to economic growth and opportunity and have been overturned by Texas courts.
