Speaker Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., exclusively released security video from the Capitol riot to Carlson earlier this year. Other media companies have so far tried and failed to get copies.
Police clear the U.S. Capitol Building with tear gas as supporters of U.S. President Donald Trump gather outside, in Washington, January 6, 2021.A coalition of nine media companies, including CNN, The New York Times and Politico, have sued for copies of the surveillance videos from the Capitol riot that Speaker Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., gave exclusively to Fox News., filed Wednesday in the U.S. District Court in Washington, D.C.
Other plaintiffs in the lawsuit seeking access to the tapes include Advance Publications, which owns Vogue, GQ and regional newspapers; the Associated Press; ProPublica; CBS; E.W. Scripps, a large local TV broadcaster; and Gannett, which owns USA Today and several local newspapers. The media outlets say the suit was brought using the Freedom of Information Act, which allows the public, including journalists, to request access to federal records, unless the information is in an exempted category.
McCarthy faced pressure from allies of Donald Trump in Congress, who have worked to further the former president's argument that the attack that day was peaceful, to release the footage. Five people died during or shortly after the riot and more than 130 police were injured that day. Hundreds of participants have been charged with crimes, including some for attacks on the police.

Fox shareholder sues Rupert Murdoch, other directors over 2020 election coverageA Fox Corp shareholder sued Chairman Rupert Murdoch and four other board members on Tuesday, saying they failed to stop Fox News from reporting falsehoods about the 2020 U.S. presidential election that damaged its credibility and prompted lawsuits. Shareholder Robert Schwarz alleged in the lawsuit filed in Delaware Chancery Court that the directors breached their duties to ensure that Fox followed its own ethical standards and avoided reputational risk, and instead sought to keep supporters of former U.S. President Donald Trump tuned in. 'FOX knew – from the Board on down – that Fox News was reporting false and dangerous misinformation about the 2020 Presidential election, but FOX was more concerned about short-term ratings and market share than the long-term damages of its failure to tell the truth,' he said in the lawsuit, which did not say how many shares he owned.
