Chavez is a longtime labor figure and ran unsuccessfully for San Jose mayor in November
“The county of San Diego is currently in the hiring process and cannot provide additional details at this time,” a spokesperson for San Diego County wrote in a statement. The San Diego County Chief Administrative Officer seat has been held by Helen N. Robbins-Meyer since 2012 — and the board will vote Tuesday on turning her position into an interim role.
Cohen, who has known Chavez for over three decades, said the board supervisor has left an “indelible” mark on the region. Chavez has been a household name in Silicon Valley for decades and was first elected to the San Jose City Council in 1998, and then re-elected again in 2002. In 2006, she ran for the San Jose mayor’s seat but lost to Councilmember Chuck Reed in a November runoff. Three years later, Chavez took the helm of the local labor movement when she became the head of the South Bay Labor Council, and later the executive director of the labor think tank Working Partnerships USA.
