Justin Reid’s departure leaves the Texans with just four safeties under contract.
Almost two weeks after Texans general manager Nick Caserio said he was “certainly open” to bringing back safety Justin Reid, the former third-round pick has agreed to leave and sign a contract with the Chiefs, a person with knowledge of the situation said Monday., will give Reid a three-year, $31.5 million deal that includes $20 million guaranteed.
Such a deal would’ve taken up the bulk of Houston’s modest cap space, and the rebuilding franchise must address needs at nearly every position. Reid’s departure leaves the Texans with just four safeties under contract and none of them are signed beyond the upcoming season, includingCaserio could address Reid’s departure during the free agency period, which officially begins with the start of the new league year on Wednesday.
There were other factors beyond money for Reid, 25, who’d voiced his desire to play for a franchise with more consistency. He played for three different defensive coordinators in four seasons, and, when Lovie Smith was promoted from defensive coordinator to head coach in February, Reid said in an interview with SiriusXM that he wasn’t “opposed to the idea of staying” in Houston.
