Other than moving games, canceling games or forcing games to be played without spectators -- while taking more proactive measures to address youth and gun violence -- what can or should be done about violence or threats marring some Friday night high school football games? The Editorial Board Roundtable offers its thoughts.
Week 1 of high school football in Northeast Ohio began Friday night, Aug. 18, as Avon Lake battled Strongsville at Avon Lake Memorial Stadium. Most teams have played this year without incident, but for some teams, it's been a star-crossed season as threats of violence and fights caused venue changes, rescheduling, contests without spectators and cancellations. The Editorial Board Roundtable assesses some possible solutions.
Hard on that decision, Solon High School’s football team canceled its Euclid away game, with Euclid ultimately plugging the hole that left in its schedule by bringing in a team from Michigan for its senior night. At about the same time, a teen’s shooting near its campus prompted Central Catholic High School in Cleveland’s Broadway-Slavic Village neighborhood to move its homecoming game to an “off-site location.”
