Opinion: California’s exorbitant gas prices and Sacramento: Letters
Re: “Gavin Newsom vs. the oil industry”
Recent legislation passed by our state lawmakers and signed by our governor that grants the California Energy Commission the power to limit oil companies’ profit margins is showcased as a win for environmentalists, but serves as a mere slap on the wrist to big oil companies that would likely prefer to take their production elsewhere.
Since Newsom announced this legislative victory as a “gas price accountability measure.” perhaps he and our lawmakers should accept responsibility for our state having the highest gas tax in the nation. If they want to “protect our families” against exorbitant gas prices, shouldn’t our elected officials hold themselves accountable for reducing our 53 cents/gallon gas tax?In my judgment the claim by letter writer Joe Galliani that the Olympic Games in Los Angeles will be a disastrous failure because of climate change is a draconian fantasy. But the Earth has warmed and cooled periodically over many centuries apparently by natural processes.
Columnist Larry Wilson points out something that I have touted for years. Until Jerry Brown’s father Edmund G. “Pat” Brown convinced the voters that a full-time Legislature would streamline government, California along with 40 other states had a part-time Legislature. Think of the myriad of bills, committees and personnel that would be reduced by this move. Let’s start championing this initiative before the Legislature passes a law that it is illegal to initiate any action against them.
