San Francisco District 11 Supervisor Ahsha Safai made official what has long been rumored: He's going to challenge Mayor London Breed next year.
One area in which he has broken with the mayor is stronger oversight of executive branch agencies. Last year, he sponsored ato monitor the Department of Homelessness and Supportive Housing. Breed opposed that measure.
Safai's pitch, so far, appears to be Breed's political priorities but with a new person at the helm. It's unclear whether Breed and Safai will face a challenger from the left, as both sit comfortably outside the city's progressive faction, a group whose most prominent members include Supervisors Dean Preston and Hillary Ronen, as well as recalled District Attorney Chesa Boudin.
