Beyond partisan battles: A legacy for a united Texas and country | Opinion

This isn’t to say all reforms in higher education were nonpartisan — certainly headlines reflected some of the more contentious items. But significant bipartisan successes emerged, including the Legislature’s overwhelming support for the multibillion-dollar investment in emerging research universities through the Texas University Fund and another $1 billion for research and development in quantum computing, space exploration and semiconductors.

and another $1 billion for state parks. These bills, authored by Senate Republicans and House Democrats, received overwhelming support. This shows that regardless of party lines, Texas leaders recognize the importance of laying the foundation for our state’s future growth and quality of life. These achievements underscore what can be accomplished when Texans work together around shared priorities, guided by data.

This session, Texas 2036 supported 73 bills that became law and four constitutional amendments that will appear on November’s ballot. These measures passed with an average support of 94% — not because they were easy, but because they were important to the future of our growing state. Texas 2036′s board exemplifies this shared understanding of the need to work together, as do fellow Texans on the Bipartisan Policy Center board like Henry Cisneros, Julián Castro, Tom Falk and Stacy Stewart. All of this debunks the myth of an irreparably divided state and nation. While partisan disputes may dominate headlines, behind the scenes, well-meaning people are bringing together their unique perspectives to develop practical, data-driven solutions.

Margaret Spellings is president and CEO of Texas 2036, a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization building long-term, data-driven strategies to secure Texas’ continued prosperity. She wrote this column for The Dallas Morning News., this essay advocates for the issues that unite Texans and that has been reflected in the work of Texas 2036.
