Better Call Saul's original plans for Kim, Howard, and Chuck differed greatly from the final show, and changing those plans enhanced Jimmy's story.

The original plans for Better Call Saul would have made it a completely different show from the acclaimed Breaking Bad spinoff that audiences know and love. As a spinoff from a hugely successful and critically acclaimed prestige drama, Better Call Saul could have easily rested on its laurels. However, it's clear from how co-creators Vince Gilligan and Peter Gould approached the show that they were aiming to make a spinoff that could eclipse its parent show in terms of quality.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT In a recent interview, Rhea Seehorn revealed that Better Call Saul changed its original plans for the characters of Kim Wexler , Howard Hamlin , and Chuck McGill . The changes were brought about by the way that the actors responded to the material, and made for a richer show. Here's how the three characters were originally imagined in the early days of Better Call Saul's development.

Chuck's condition was originally designed to show that, unlike the tacky Saul Goodman, Jimmy McGill had a proper heart. Instead, Jimmy's relationship with Chuck provided the narrative arc of his transition to Saul Goodman and back again. Chuck's disapproval of Jimmy's aspirations of becoming a lawyer inadvertently put him on the path to the criminality that viewers saw in Breaking Bad.

Better Call Saul's Changes Made The Spinoff Great Changing flashy lawyer Howard Hamlin from villain to victim of Jimmy McGill's criminal lifestyle is emblematic of what made Better Call Saul so great. It always avoided the obvious choices that would have risked making the Breaking Bad prequel too predictable. If Better Call Saul had kept Chuck McGill as a tragic figure, it would have been hard for Jimmy to come back from Saul Goodman in the finale.

The brotherly conflict in Better Call Saul was perfect, so it would have been difficult for that redemptive ending to hit the required emotional beat if Howard had been the villain. Swapping Chuck with Kim also improved the emotional ending of Jimmy McGill's story. Kim always believed in Jimmy, even when he didn't believe in himself so in finally holding his hands up to his crimes, Jimmy showed her that she was right all.
