Barbara Bolsen became the first female editor of the Chicago-based American Medical News before earning a divinity degree in her 40s and going to work for The Night Ministry, a Chicago nonprofit group aimed at assisting those who are homeless or experiencing poverty.

“She was diligent, she was smart and she was really intelligent and astute and she worked hard,” said Patricia Skalka, who worked for a different AMA publication in the 1970s. “She was a journalist at heart, so her curiosity knew no bounds. She would track something down to the nth degree and research and get all the information.”

While at the American Medical News, Bolsen began pursuing a master’s degree in divinity from the Chicago Theological Seminary, which received in 1998.“She always said she wanted something that used her heart as well as her head,” Skalka said. In 2000, Bolsen was promoted to lead The Night Ministry’s outreach and health ministry, overseeing the operations of a mobile health and chaplaincy program for homeless and precariously housed individuals. Four years later, she became the group’s vice president for programs, overseeing all programs, including mobile health, outreach, a youth shelter, youth parenting support and continuing care.
