Aurora on Friday celebrated its Mexican community with a flag-raising ceremony downtown held the day before Mexican Independence Day.
The ceremony, held at 1 p.m. at One Aurora Plaza at 8 E. Galena Blvd., was also timed to coincide with Friday’s opening of Hispanic Heritage Month, which runs through mid-October.The event included a proclamation from Mayor Richard Irvin, along with the presentation of the annual Viva Excellence Awards as well as special mariachi performances.
“We have all those restaurants and bakeries downtown and on the East Side in particular and we’re able to shine a spotlight on them as well,” he said.Irvin said that Aurora’s diversity is “its biggest strength.” “I live right near here and work as an usher at the Paramount and I come to events downtown here all the time,” said Ed Novotny of Aurora. “I like the fact that the city is very inclusive about everything. This is a good thing for Aurora and the city does a good job of promoting it too.”
