Named after the Greek god of rivers and water, The Royal Fleet Auxiliary Proteus represents a pivotal step forward in safeguarding the UK's maritime interests.
The role of a ship's sponsor is an honorary one, bestowing good fortune upon the vessel, making them a permanent member of the ship's crew who attends key moments in the vessel's life. Initially, RFA Proteus served as an oil rig-support vessel. However, after undergoing extensive conversion and alterations at the Cammell Laird yard in Birkenhead, the 6,000-tonne ship has been transformed into a highly specialized maritime powerhouse.
