He said American is 60% of its way to completing its goal of cutting debt by $15 billion by the end of 2025. That doesn’t mean the carrier’s balance sheet is “fixed,” but the pace of improvement is ahead of expectations while the stock trades about 35% below where it was when debt peaked in the second quarter of 2021.
Prior to Baker’s upgrade, only four of the 22 analysts surveyed by FactSet had the equivalent of buy ratings on American, while the rest were either neutral or bearish. Baker noted that for decades, legacy carriers struggled to so slow the advance of discounters, particularly Southwest. The discounters had higher margins, their revenue trends outperformed during economic downturns, they grew more quickly and Wall Street compensated them with higher relative valuations.
