Beachgoers contemplating a dip on the Bolivar Peninsula may want to think again after sea turtle patrollers spotted an alligator on the beach earlier this week.
. That range consists of about 120 counties with the most sightings occurring along the Gulf Coastal Plains. The American alligator is the only crocodilian species native to Texas.
The alligator's presence that morning could be attributed to March through May being the animal's peak time for breeding and nesting. It's unclear what the alligator's gender was, but females usually lay between 15 and 60 eggs in their nest mounds, which are composed of grasses, cattails, bark, mud and other vegetation found in the area, Texas Parks and Wildlife states.are protected game animals in Texas. Special permits are required to hunt, raise, or own alligators.
It also is recommended to not try to feed alligators due to them associating people with food, according to Texas Parks and Wildlife."An alligator that has been frequently hand-fed will often lunge at an outstretched hand," the state agency [email protected]
