As of 8 a.m. Sunday, there were 109 wildfires burning in the province, with 34 among them considered out of control

“I’m hoping to be able to schedule a call with the prime minister in the next day or so and I’m building a list of things that we’ll be able to ask for. I’ll take them seriously when they say that they’re prepared to give help,” Smith said, while also praising the City of Edmonton for providing an evacuation centre on short notice.

A partial view of Alberta’s wildfire dashboard as of 8 a.m. Sunday, May 7, 2023, shows 109 active wildfires, 34 of which were classified as out of control.Among the communities evacuated was Brazeau County, including all 7,000 people living in Drayton Valley, 140 kilometres west of the province’s capital Edmonton.

RCMP are also working with municipal governments as well as fire and emergency management agencies to assist with evacuations and community safety, Deputy Commissioner Curtis Zablocki said in a separate Saturday news conference, adding worsening conditions may warrant a call for out-of-province support.

“All we’ve been hearing about is the looters going through Evansburg when they had evacuated,” Sleno said Friday, adding that despite efforts to keep the family calm, her son was worried about the thieves. “We tried to stay as calm as we could when we evacuated, but you can only hide panic so much.”Article contentFILE PHOTO: Fire WCU002 in Yellowhead County is burning out of control.
