Screen Rant's MythForce review.
Quick Links Saturday mornings in the 80s were inseparable from their cartoon lineups, and new first-person fantasy roguelite MythForce injects the resonant nostalgia for this era into an accessible multiplayer dungeon crawler. The concept presents an original animated universe as a slightly dopey brand which appears most equivalent to 1983’s classic Dungeons & Dragons animated series, but it makes for a surprisingly convincing ploy, thanks to some superb art direction and voice performances.
At the start, one to four players choose from one to four characters. There’s Maggie the mage, Victoria the knight, Hawkins the hunter, and Rico the rogue, and these archetype classes play out as their role titles might suggest. All four are essentially able to complete any chapter of MythForce’s campaign on their own, with each map node designated an “episode” which sends the player back to the hub on failure or completion.
Unfortunately, that variety has a short ceiling, and its viability directly correlates to a grindy permanent progress system associated with the main hub. In between episodes, players can choose to allocate accumulated gold, socketable gems, and a mix of other upgrade routines to boost weapon damage, stats, gear drop quality, and perk potency, making later runs more likely to succeed.
Landing blows or magical attacks returns excellent feedback, and a few hours spent with MythForce will eventually make melee distance and sniping angles feel second-nature. Every character ability and ultimate power is useful and impactful, and cooldowns are tuned low enough to enable frequent usage.
