A rare Texas Hill Country wildflower is declared 'threatened' due to development, hungry deer
Federal officials have proposed granting threatened status to the bracted twistflower, a rare wildflower native to Texas. If approved, the designation would prohibit removing, damaging or destroying the plants.A wildflower that grows in the Texas Hill Country now is considered a"threatened species" under the Endangered Species Act.
U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service recently determined the bracted twistflower is a threatened species and designated the 1,596 acres where it grows as a critical habitat. The bracted twistflower grows in Uvalde, Medina, Baxar and Travis counties., the rare, violet flower has been in need of protection since 1975. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in 2021 issued the proposal to protect the bracted twistflower after a lawsuit was filed by the Center for Biological Diversity.
According to U.S. Fish and Wildlife, the primary threats to the bracted twistflower are urban residential development, changes in wildfire frequency and dense populations of white-tailed deer, which eat the flower. The bracted twistflower provides nectar and pollen for pollinating insects such as bees. There are only a few known populations of the species in Texas, and the populations on public land are declining, according to the
