It has hosted Rita Hayworth and Shirley Temple and Bob Hope and Lyndon B. Johnson. It has welcomed Santa to its dock by shrimp boat for an annual Christmas party, where Mrs. Claus waited on the shore and Santa read Christmas stories to children from its porch.
The Luther Hotel would be the first to admit it is not at its best right now. In its glory days, it did not have a chain-link fence wrapped around its perimeter or plywood boarding its bottom-floor windows. The yellow pine and cypress wood didn’t show through its white paint. The hotel confesses: much of its interior has fallen to tatters. A red armchair sits covered in dust. A sink has fallen completely off the turquoise-tiled wall of a bathroom.
