Sutter’s name is ubiquitous in the state, from San Francisco’s Sutter Street to the city of the same name in Yuba County, as well as wineries, health care providers and college residence halls. “While Sutter’s Fort [State Historic Park] focused on John Sutter’s role as Sacramento’s founder and a pioneer of the California dream, the park missed talking about the real impact of Sutter and on the Native American people,” John Fraser, Capital District Superintendent of California State Parks, said in the press release. “State Parks is committed to telling a more accurate and inclusive story so that everyone will feel comfortable visiting this historic park and reflect on its complex past.
