UEFA is revising the international soccer calendar, altering the qualification process and adding changes to the Champions League and European Championship. They aim to increase competition and reduce repetition.
UEFA は2028-29シーズンから国際サッカーの日程を大幅に見直す。 従来の予選はスイス式リーグに置き換える。 改定チャンピオンズリーグと同様に、ダブルヘッダーを減らし、階層制でより多様な相手と対戦する。
競争を高め、同じカードを繰り返さないのが目的だ。 UEFAは2028年欧州選手権後に代表戦日程を大幅変更する。 現在のネーションズリーグは4ディビジョンで各4チームがホーム・アウェイで対戦する。 新 formato では3リーグ各18チームとなり、各リーグは6チーム×3グループに分かれる。
各国は5異なる相手と計6試合を行い、ホーム＆アウェイ2連戦は自国ポット内1回のみ、他ポットとは単発のホームまたはアウェイ戦となる。 この改革はネーションズリーグにとどまらない。 従来の欧州予選は5～6カ国で構成されるグループでホーム・アウェイ計8～10試合を行う方式だった。 新体制では2つのディビジョンが設けられる。1つ目はランキング上位36カ国、2つ目は残る18～19カ国で構成される。
上位リーグは12チーム×3グループの構成で、各国は3つのシードポットから2チームずつ抽選され、計6試合を行う。 これは現在の単調なグループステージとは大きく異なる。 グループステージの主要な形式は刷新されるが、UEFAは現行システムの成功要素を維持したいと考えている。 昇格・降格プレーオフは残され、新リーグ間の競争の架け橋となる。 2部リーグは、全加盟協会が参加できるよう6チーム×3グループまたは7チーム×1グループで構成される。
トップリーグの上位チームは決勝トーナメントに直接進出し、残る枠はプレーオフで決まる。 この方式により、下位チームにも国際大会に出場する可能性が残される。
