A 60-year-old man who was swept away in Birmingham-area flash flooding died at a hospital.
A 60-year-old Birmingham man has died after he was swept away in flash flooding outside of St. Vincent’s Hospital.Authorities said Speed was caught up in the swift-moving water at 3:01 p.m. Wednesday when he was walking in the road and trying to get into a family member’s vehicle.Bystanders pulled Speed from the water and performed CPR. He was then taken to St. Vincent’s where he was pronounced dead at 3:28 p.m.Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service Capt. Orlando Reynolds said.
The hardest-hit areas appeared to be on the south side of the county, with flash flooding reported near St. Vincent’s Hospital and surrounding Southside neighborhoods.The National Weather Service issued had issued flash flood warning for south central Jefferson County and northwestern Shelby County. Doppler radar indicated thunderstorms producing between 1 to 2 inches of rain.in flood waters in northwest Birmingham.
Bragg was reportedly assisting with moving a road hazard from the street on Pebble Creek Parkway at Highway 78 when he lost his balance and disappeared in the water.
