Five major movies have officially shut down filming as the SAG-AFTRA actors strike begins, with key issues including fair pay and use of AI.
Five major movies have officially shut down production amid the SAG-AFTRA actors' strike, which officially started today. SAG-AFTRA authorized the actors strike yesterday after negotiations with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers fell through. The actors' strike comes in the midst of the Writers Guild of America strike, making it the first time actors and writers have been on strike at the same time since 1960.
Now, The Hollywood Reporter confirms five major movies have shut down filming because of the SAG-AFTRA actors strike. These include Deadpool 3, Venom 3, Gladiator 2, Lilo & Stitch, and an untitled F1 drama film starring Brad Pitt. While these are the only movies confirmed to be impacted by the actors' strike so far, other productions will no doubt be impacted as the strike continues.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Why Actors & Writers Are On Strike Now that SAG-AFTRA actors are on strike, they will no longer be allowed to cross the picket line and film scenes for upcoming movies and TV shows. Actors are also now restricted in promoting upcoming movies to the press while the strike is ongoing.
While SAG-AFTRA and the WGA are separate organizations with different contracts with the AMPTP, both groups are fighting for similar issues. These include increased pay, residual payment for streaming movies and TV shows, and regulations on the use of artificial intelligence in producing films and shows. These demands address the entertainment industry's changing climate, which includes a reliance on streaming services and the possible implementation of AI in creative works.
While the actors' strike will impact nearly every major production involving SAG-AFTRA actors, movies and shows would not be possible without the hard work actors put into bringing them to life. By striking, actors are responding to a changing climate in Hollywood they want studios in the AMPTP to properly address. The SAG-AFTRA strike will impact many productions, but these are temporary setbacks as actors and writers fight for fair treatment and compensation.
