Tseng, a junior at Frisco’s Liberty High School, contracted COVID-19 earlier this semester and was forced to miss class for two weeks during her required quarantine. When she arrived back on campus, she felt lost.
With kids absent for greater periods of time during the pandemic, they are missing major teaching and learning opportunities, Byrd said.Both Byrd and López expressed concerns that State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness tests have not adapted to the mounting hardships at schools. “I hope that helps get her to where she needs to be and where I know she can be,” Gutierrez said. “But it does scare me a little bit, especially because I know not every school has extra tutoring for kids.”Both students and teachers need better support to improve their mental health in coming years, the panelists said.
